Continuing Education Requirements for the State of Louisiana

Requirements for license renewal for RNs Advanced Practice: Approved Providers: Failure to meet requirements:

One of the following:
~Continuing Education per year
5 Contact Hours (full-time employment; 2080 hours per calendar year)
10 Contact Hours (part-time employment; minimum of 160 hours er calendar year)
15 Contact Hours (less than part-time or unemployed)
~Certification by organizations in a specialty area of nursing, approved by board.

All continuing education requirements may be obtained by Home Study.

 

A minimum of 300 hours of practice in advanced practice and a minimum of 2 college credit hours per year of relevance to advanced practice role or a minimum of 30 continuing education contact hours approved by the board each year. Of the 30 contact hours, a maximum of 10 C.E. contact hours may be approved continuing medical education (CME's).

Failure to complete an audit of continuing education requirements satisfactorily or falsification of information may result in disciplinary action against the licensee. At a minimum, the license will be invalidated. Falsification of data on the license renewal or audit forms constitutes grounds for disciplinary action.

Effective in 1999, State Boards of Nursing are required to report adverse actions taken against licensees for forward to the Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank (HIPDB). A licensee who has had disciplinary action taken by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing can expect notification that a report of previous action has been submitted to the HIPDB.
